Good friend in his early 60s just discovered he has stomach cancer. He's in a hospital trying to gain strength (rapidly lost 40 lbs) to start chemo. Any recommendations of books to send to him that may be inspirational, help with what to expect, etc.?

how to change your mind talks about using psychedelics to heal, and its used for eol care. It has a lot of extraneous crap in it but might speak to him about how to deal with his mortality.

I was given several books when I got diagnosed with cancer. I’m not into emotional or self helps books, so those things only made me feel worse. It’s hard to explain, but they made me feel bad about being pissed off, sad, depressed. Reading about it seemed to make it worse. What really helped me was going back and reading books I loved. I didn’t have a long fight with it, so I got lucky. Good luck to your friend.

Give him one of the inspirational books from this thread, and also the longest book you can think of. Like Infinite Jest or something. To show him that you know he'll be around long enough to finish the book.

The Jerusalem Man trilogy.
The author was diagnosed with cancer before he wrote the series I think and you can kind of feel that coming through the page even though it’s a sci-fi/western/fantasy saga.

Probably not what you're looking for, but you could recommend coloring books.
If your friend has a good sense of humor, give him this.
quote:
Coloring is an activity that we tend to associate with children. As we grow older, we put aside our crayons and colored pencils in favor of more respectable writing utensils like pens and highlighters. However, it turns out coloring can be beneficial for adults — namely for its de-stressing power.
The practice generates wellness, quietness and also stimulates brain areas related to motor skills, the senses and creativity.

this was my thought when i saw thread title.
just reading a great book will probably be better than going more into cancer stuff that he is probably dealing with 24/7 right now

Haven't read this either but I've heard good things about the book.

Everyone is different so their journey through cancer is different. A friend of mine borrowed all of those cancer books when she was diagnosed, and she loved them. To her, knowing someone else had went through the same stuff helped her.
