Metallic ‘tinging’ noise (2005 Silverado) ***updated OP

You guys helped me out last time when my hubs went out. Was hoping y’all could give me a hand again..
Truck starts and runs fine, no issues, but when I hit the gas while the truck is in drive or reverse, I hear a TING TING TING TING noise.. if I had to compare it to something, it sounds like someone is hitting some sort of metal cover with a small, hard hammer. It’s really hard to pinpoint exactly where it’s coming from. Has anyone dealt with this before?
I’ve researched online and I’m finding anything from CV joints, to loose bolts on my exhaust manifold. My dads mechanic friend said it could even be something with the power steering, which doesn’t make any sense IMO
If I rev up the engine in park or neutral, it doesn’t do it, only when there’s a load on the engine
**** ETA 2nd problem
I had to change my starter (which completely alleviated my problem), however, I have a new problem with my truck
Whenever I go start my truck, sometimes I’ll turn the key, the starter will just CLICK CLICK, then everything shuts down completely. The steering wheel will lock, my AC turns off, radio, lights, everything else DEAD.. if I jiggle my steering wheel the right way, I’ll get temporary power until my truck decides to start again..
I’m thinking it has something to do with my anti theft system, but I’m not sure... any suggestions??
ETA - if my description isn’t clear enough, let me know, I tried to relay this info as best as I could

Is there a clunk when you shift into reverse? Sounds like it could be a u-joint bearing going out. Usually feel it when you first get on the gas and when engine braking.

Negative, no clunking when shifting into reverse
**knock on wood**
the only problem I’m having is the ‘tinging’, I have a really good feel for my truck and nothing else is wrong with it. I’m paranoid about transmission issues so I’d notice if it were acting funny while shifting

I would still have the u-joints checked first. That’s prettymuch what you described and most shops are pretty reasonable. They’re a PIA to do yourself and if you let them get too bad it leads to a whole lot of other problems in the drivetrain.
ETA: clunk when shifting doesn’t develop until the joint has a good bit of play in it, the bearings will make noise before that. I only asked cause it’s a dead ringer.

Is it something that’s easy to notice? How will I know my U joint is bad just by looking at it?

Does it sound like something loose around the flywheel? Does it make the noise when you accelerate or when you brake while moving in reverse?
If so, it could be a bad spring on your starter that allows the starter gear to slide into the flywheel. If that’s it, change the starter before those gears really engage at the wrong time and tear up some expensive stuff.

Yes!!
It definitely sounds like it’s coming from the front half of my truck, but it’s hard to pinpoint because it only does it when the truck is moving

I had what sounds like the same problem on a 97 Silverado. Louis Altazan at AGCO diagnosed it for me by email. He recommended changing the starter immediately. I did it myself and that gear spring was the problem, exactly like he said.

Google u-joint if you’ve never seen one, they’re hard to miss once you have. Get under the truck and grab the whole joint(s) and see if there’s any play it in. If it moves any when you shake it then there’s a bad bearing and it needs to be replaced. They run about 30 bucks at the parts store but changing them isn’t fun so most people I know, even those who like to work on their trucks, will let a shop do it on a lift.

Another way to diagnose it while parked is to park on an uphill grade with motor running. At that angle, the gear will probably slide towards the flywheel just like it does when you accelerate.

Literally just did this in my driveway and it instantly started TING TINGing
I will dive into this ASAP and report back

Tinging while parked on a hill is a telltale sign of that starter problem. And it should eliminate any possibility of the u-joints being a problem since they aren't in motion while parked.
Good luck with it. Changing that starter in the driveway was a little bit of a pain in the arse, mostly because there is not much slack in the wiring that has be disconnected/reconnected.

I’m gonna pull it apart once the sun goes down a little.. thanks everyone for the input

If it's a 4wd my guess would be your transfer case. I had a 2005 Chevy 4wd at around 110,000 miles I started hearing a noise only comparison I could think of at the time was like a dried leaf be blown around. A week later my transfer case went out chain broke

It’s a 4.8 2x4 with 132K miles on it
Check the previous replies, I think we might have found our solution.. thanks for your suggestion though, I’ll give that a look if the starter isn’t the problem

Hawkster, just wanted to extend a HUGE thank you for the advice. I changed the starter out by myself (took about 30-40 minutes) and it isn’t making the noise anymore.. saved me a few hundred bucks so thanks for that!!

I’m very glad that did the job. Your description of the problem was exactly what I was experiencing and I’m happy I could share Louis’ expertise with someone else.
