I don't think Mueller is looking to put together evidence of Trump crimes unrelated to his candidacy. Maybe so, but he's wasting his time if he is.

then i seriously doubt Manafort has much to offer him and the immunity for Podesta makes even less sense

The whole appointment of the special counsel was to determine if the trump campaign colluded with the Russians. Here is a court filing from Mueller. It seems contrary to the statement you just made.
