They get weekends again and push a hoop down the street with a stick.
It seems like your hang up is really this one line.
Yes there's issues with this solution in the movie but it's not this insurmountable they nuked the world scenario.
It's more an ethical conundrum attached to a happy ending. And easily something that another story can be made on.

See I like the happy ending message at the end of the book better. Wade realizes the importance of being in the real world and how much better it is to be outside the Oasis with Artemis. He isn't forcing that message on the world.
His original plan in the book for the money, even if it may be a joke, is to build a space ship and leave the trash heap of Earth behind.

why didnt they just limit everyone's avatar to 5 days each week in the OASIS instead? that way the whole world isn't turned off at the same time, people take breaks when they want.
