Wasn't showing the physical center of the Oasis is still a craphole city with debris, trash, slums, slave pens a decent way of showing if this is Columbus wtf happened to the rest of America?
It didn't go anywhere near the level of the book, but it did not need to go that far for the movie. Parts about needing guards to cross between cities and how much of the world only exists in the Oasis now was left out. All the explaining he did when he was moving out to Columbus and the control of the ISPs and such. He went into a lot of detail about the state of the world in the book.

I guess it just seems nitpicky.
I read the book it was fun but sloppily written in parts.
The movie was fun but sloppily paced in parts.
Both got the point across to me that the real world sucked in those settings. And I feel like I'm about as average Joe as can be.

None of that detail is needed in this movie.
