Well, he wasn't black to the Dems and their constituents.
They painted him as an Uncle Tom evil white guy pretending to be black.
So they felt they had free reign and the public - Time, Newsweek, Dems, libs - were cool with it...because there was nothing worse in that era than a black person who didn't believe all the Dems ideology.
Dems actually labeled him a traitor to his people.
Like he has a duty as a human being to live his life solely based on the color of his skin and what you think that means? The left philosophy was yes.
