It's probably running the entire day, freezing, then thawing out at night. Shutting it off for a day let it thaw out somewhat

Have you tried opening the doors to your daughters rooms at night? I'd make sure everything is normal at night as possible, then go from there.
Also, as said take a look at the evaporator coils. You can look at them from under the unit by pulling the filters and looking up. Or you can usually unscrew an access panel on the side of the fridge.
