Maybe, margins are the key. Carrier thinks because they invented the modern AC, their product is worth more than it truly is. No way the percentage markup on that is as good as the others.

You're in the business so you have better access to the cost info than I would, but I suspect Rheem/Ruud have slightly higher % markups than Trane/AS. May be wrong, though.

The units all have higher SEER rating now and that has traditionally meant more breakdowns as tolerances becomes tighter and stresses are increased on units.

I really do think most of the junk that was out there has been pushed out of the traditional home AC world in the window/portable unit market. While some are better than others in the residential AC world, I dont think there is a great amount of difference between the major brands.
