It's about 37% comes out for Fed and State taxes for me.
ETA: Hell I just looked at it, I pay more in taxes in one year than I used to make in a year. It's definitely over 37%. Closer to 41%
Slap a 10% sales tax on top of that whenever you spend the money and there's your 50%.
Back on topic, a 90% tax or anything close to that obscenity will literally never pass. Do you honestly think rich politicians would vote themselves out of the upper class? And even if it did pass the elite would revolt and rally the lower classes a la the American Revolution.
You see, the American Dream/goal of capitalism has NEVER been to make everyone wealthy/financially equal. It has been to PROVIDE the OPPORTUNITY for everyone to be wealthy. Throughout the vast majority of history there was almost no chance of ever moving up in class, regardless of what you did, and now, upon finally achieving that dream (with the added benefit of providing incredible abundance for all, including those contributing the least) people want to sulk and whine because others who put it all on the line are getting rewarded commensurately more? It's laughable.
