It works both ways actually. They are easy to spot. In fact, there are more paid posters on this board from Bama's social media public relations dept. than from LSU's SMPR dept. I know people who work in this field and have done quite a bit of research on this subject on my own. It has been proven to be quite an effective tool in influencing opinions and shaping the narrative and is effective in very tangible ways, much more so than people want to give it credit for. Of course there are some trailer trash types and other easily influenced types who just enjoy being extremely unreasonably negative ( know in the field as EUN's) or (in some cases) extremely unreasonably positive (EUP's) and just do it for free without even realizing it.
