Phil knew it was bush league the minute he did it which was clear based off what he reportedly said moments after. That story completely changed during interviews afterwards when he had time to think about what he would say and crawfish his way out of it. I just don't think he expected as much backlash at the time, thus the public apology.

So a long time popular professional golfer intentionally cheats on national tv in a major golf tournament and some of you don't think there is anything wrong with it? Golf is a game of honor and respect for the rules.
Before you respond to try to correct my use of the word, "cheater", you should know that the definition of a cheater, according to Websters, is "a person who acts dishonestly in order to gain an advantage." PM admitted on national TV that he engaged in his activity to gain an advantage. It was bush league and he should have been DQ'ed.
What if his push putt, which was hit while the ball was in motion, went in the hole? I realize he got a 2 shot penalty, but would that have counted?
Why wait until the ball is 3 feet past the hole, what if he tapped it right behind the hole?
What if his caddie intentionally stopped the ball with his foot just 6 inches from the hole?
What if he stopped a moving ball before it was about to go in the water or a hazard? A 2 stroke penalty might be better than a water ball penalty depending upon the drop zone.
There are so many things wrong with what he did. The only comforting thought, when the PGA and the R&A change or clarify the rule (which I believe they will do), the new rule will be called the Mickelson rule to remind us of the arse that he made of himself in the US Open.
Here is a link to an SI article that echos my sentiments.
