The NCAA has done quite a bit to limit the other options for players to make money. I think it is funny to argue that especially for football players (the cash cows for Universities) there are other real options to continue their career.
And now the landscape of college athletics could not possibly be more different than they were then, but some think the rules should be the same.
There is no logic to that, none.

However, I also think the dramatic potrayal of "like slavery", "denying basic human rights", hurts the side arguing for a change
People hear that and they shut down and dont hear the argument because it starts from such a place of ridiculousness
