The mom and her friend Joan conjured a demon when they were younger. According to the book the demon had to be attached to a male host for them to reep the riches that came with the conjuring. In the beginning the daughter says her brother killed him self at 16 because “Mom was trying to put something in me”, which was the demon. Then it is mentioned that she did not want the daughter to mis-Carry Peter, so the assumption is he was he last male host left in the family. At the end it’s said the demon was attached to Charlie who is not a male host. So in order for them to switch the demon from Charlie to peter both had to be killed. When Charlie was killed the satanic marking was on that pole so it wasn’t an accident. Also, the daughter mentions sleep walking and coming close to killing Peter while doing so. Also you can see the part Joan played to have Peter killed. So at the end you see Charlie with the crown on a severed head and then worshipping more of a false king of hell since it’s not a male. Then Peter comes in and they are able insert the demon and finally crown the real king of hell

The only part I’m not sure about is why the mom had to be dug up and put in the attic
