Shellcracker is just a local name. In areas where Pumpkinseeds exist, people use it.

No. There are plenty of areas where shellcrackers and pumpkinseeds coexist. They aren’t the same fish. Y’all have some coonass name for what rednecks call shell crackers. Pumpkinseeds are typically much smaller and much more colorful, and do better in creeks, at least that’s where I’ve caught the majority of mine

Shell cracker. Red worms on the bottom.

Pumpkinseed. Lots of blue

You're not getting it. Shellcracker is a alt name for both Redeared Sunfish and Pumpkinseed. We all know they are different fish.

quote:

In the southernmost regions of its distribution, the pumpkinseed has developed a larger mouth opening and abnormally large jaw muscles to aid in feeding; its forage is small crustaceans and mollusks. The larger bite radius and enhanced jaw muscles allow the pumpkinseed to crack the shells of their prey to attain the soft flesh within, thus providing one common name of 'shellcracker'.[9]
