Here's the thing with tomato plants being that crowded. They promote fungal and bacterial issues very easily since they have heavy foliage and they don't have enough air circulation to help them dry quickly once wet.
I've found that whole "square foot gardening" works well for some things but not for all plants, especially ones that grow tall and especially in our hot, humid climate.
