I remember when they asked Bill Clinton about having sex in the Oval Office and he said no. Latter he said it was in an adjacent hallway, so technically, it wasn't in the Oval Office.
This is how Democrats parse words.
In this case, when they say the White House didn't know, they might be referring to the actual building!
