Not having a guitarist like Herrington, Larry Carlton, Elliot Randal, and others to perform with them would be more fatal to the groups music than the loss of Becker. Becker was a great song writer producer type, but almost all of the classic guitar riffs associated with Steely Dan were created and recorded by session players. I have seen them live many times, what Becker did on guitar added little to the music, it always pissed me off that he would not take the time to learn the second guitar part on the "Reelin in the Years" solo's he just fumbled through the chords, and his "stoner" rant in the middle of the shows ate up a lot of time that for which I had paid to to hear their music.
This x1000. When I saw them in 2006 Becker was only on stage about 20% of the time and seemed disinterested. If they went by Steely then, they should now as well.
