I know it's just semantics, but that wasn't a PFR interview, just an article. It was just quotes taken from his on-the-field presser post-mini-camp.
I'm only saying that because it was almost 12 minutes long (video is on YT & Saints website) and he addressed a lot more than just Fleener, Ingram and Barrett if anyone is interested.
Touched on Davenport, Trequan Smith, Rick Leonard, Boston Scott, Will Clapp, Jonathan Williams, and even Adrian Peterson.

Williams was moreso brought up by the reporter ans Payton just commented that they picked him up last year, so I wouldn't read anything into him being "the guy" we go with while Ingram's out.
But based on other things he's said (Kamara isn't getting Ingram's rushing touches), someone will have to fill in.
He did bring up that they picked Scott as a running back and not just as a potential returner, so they seem pretty high on him.
I imagine if none of the backs we have step up in preseason then we will look to a veteran back. Payton said they have them ranked, but didn't necessarily say Peterson was atop or even high on the list (didn't say he was low either).
I imagine Hightower is likely up there, being familiar with the system. If Peterson takes vet minimum then maybe he would be the guy.
But we are definitely leaning to filling the void in house first.
