I know Savage seems like a terrible QB, but honestly, he isn't terrible. He has starting experience, and can be a decent backup if (god forbid,) Brees goes down. As much as I like Hill and Barrett, I would put my money on Savage playing better if that situation ever arises.

However, I would not be surprised to see Hill or Barrett do well either. I just think Savage is a pretty good backup, considering I'm a fan of having a young backup with starting experience.

Just for comparison (yes I know Keenum played for Fischer when he did terribly)

TOM SAVAGE career stats
2017
cmp%= 56.1
yds=1,412
TDs=5
INTS = 6
Rating=71.4

2016
cmp%= 63
yds=461
TDs=0
INTS =0
Rating=71.4

2014
cmp%= 52.6
yds=127
TDs=0
INTS = 1
Rating=51.9

CASE KEENUM career stats
2017
cmp%= 67.6
yds=3,547
TDs=22
INTS = 7
Rating=98.3

2016
cmp%= 60.9
yds=2,201
TDs=9
INTS =11
Rating=76.4

2015
cmp%= 60.8
yds=828
TDs=4
INTS =1
Rating=87.7

2014
cmp%= 58.4
yds=435
TDs=2
INTS =2
Rating=72.2

2013
cmp%= 54.2
yds=1,760
TDs=9
INTS = 6
Rating=78.2

NOW...
Do I think Savage is Keenum? NO. However, discarding the 2017 outlier year, Keenums early career is quite similar to Savages thus far. Keenum's is slightly better, but its honestly not that far off. Also for consideration, the rams had a much better team than the Texans during those years.

My point is, I don't think that Savage is that bad of a backup QB for us. Its still early in his career and under the right system, might find a role for a team, and could grow considerably, especially considering our Oline and Running game is significantly better than the texans. Just don't discard savage as a servicable backup.

And yes, I think we need a succession plan for Drew, the lack of a young, promising QB is a huge risk IMO. But hey, if we do get a SB in the next 2-3 years (if Drew can last 3 more), then it'll all be worth the risk.
