I did this when I was younger and tired of working offshore. Since I was offshore, I had to use leave and make up some clever excuses to even be able to go.
I paid travel and hotel for a first interview, where the supervisor I'd be working for couldn't make it. I had a pretty good interview with an HR lady and the project director.
I paid travel and hotel for a second interview to meet with the supervisor, who must have gotten resumes mixed up because he had very awkward mixed up questions.
They emailed me for a third in-person interview to talk to the VP. I was stuck offshore and asked for a phone interview and I never heard a peep out of them again.
At this point in my career, they can fly me business class or kiss my arse.
