After stewing on it, I definitely think the "random" ashing of the Avengers was meant to make space for the original Avengers to shine in Avengers 4 as their final act. I wouldn't expect more than cameo's out of any of them, except maybe Thor, after that.

The Russo's are the master's of this genre. I never got overloaded and bored in the final battle, which tends to happen in a lot of these super hero films with a big final battle. They just know how to film interesting, fun fights, and pace them perfectly. They also know when to drop a joke and when to let the moment be.
