BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -
A new app set to launch by early May will allow Louisiana drivers to store a valid digital copy of their driver's license on their smartphone, according to the Baton Rouge Business Report.
La Wallet - or Louisiana digital driver's license - will be available statewide, thanks to a public-private partnership and a law amended during the 2016 legislative session.
Act 625 by Rep. Ted James, D-Baton Rouge authorizes Louisiana drivers to carry a digitized copy of their license provided by the Office of Motor Vehicles as an alternative to a physical license.
The law also prohibits cops from issuing a ticket during traffic stops or checkpoints to anyone who presents a digital license in lieu of a physical copy.
The app, priced at $5.99, will be available for iOS and Android devices, according to Envoc President Calvin Fabre. Envoc produced the app and is working in partnership with OMV and State Police.
The arrival of La Wallet doesn’t mean Louisiana drivers should toss their physical licenses just yet. Drivers, at least for now, must still carry a hard copy. Though state police is already on board with adopting the digital license as a valid ID, other involved state agencies are still working to adopt the digital system.
Another important note: A digital license won’t work when it comes to boarding an aircraft.

The most notable pieces of this article are Ted James and Louisiana did something that isn't absolutely retarded.

Will this help you dodge the eye test? Asking for a friend.

So when I forget my phone, the cop is going to tell me he can't look up my information like with insurance? Then threaten to arrest me?

If you forget your phone and wallet, it's a bad day already.

This was financed completely by Envoc and they'll retain all proceeds from the app sales.

IF you willingly hand a cop your cell phone, can they go through your apps and see if you've been texting and stuff?

I was at a checkpoint and had an expired insurance card. The trooper pulled it up and it showed my insurance was current and he sent me on my way.

I've done it before, doesn't usually bother me. Usually forget both on the table as I'm getting the rest of my stuff

quote:I was pulled over without my license. I knew my number. AL issued licenses have a 7 digit number. Cop looked it up in his computer. I got a speeding ticket but not having the card was no problem. I've explained this story to too many people who think you have to carry the physical card. Even without a laptop he can call in and they can look it up.

Learn your ID number. It's not hard. We used to know tons of phone numbers back in the day.

I know my DL number, I also know this small town cop didn't want to run my insurance to prove I had it. He was just on a power trip

Nope.
Whoever gets this is basically giving their cell phone over to be searched warrant free.

Phone calls, text messages, social media, bank accounts, locations, browsing history, associates...
All without a warrant and completely legal.

Not without consent or a warrant

I took a picture of mine, front and back, just in case I don’t have it on me but have my phone.

I just take a picture of mine. It’s been tested before and worked

If you're worried about the eye test, just stand near someone taking it and memorize what they say. If that doesn't work, get in line behind an old person, because chances are they won't be able to see crap and it'll look like you have perfect vision by comparison.
