I've lurked on tigerdroppings for several years and this board for quite a while, but have finally been pushed into posting!
I'm currently looking at a new hunting companion, and have been drawn to pudelpointers. From what I've read, I'm very impressed with the ability to be a utilitarian hunting dog, while also having a mild temperament around the house and yard. I've done a fair amount of research but am hoping for any first hand experiences with this breed, breeders someone might know, and any other general information.

I cant speak from an owner perspective, but i hunted over one a bunch this year in a duck blind. That thing had more energy than any dog i have ever seen, and more drive to hunt and retrieve than any dog I have ever been around. He doesnt have alot of formal training, but is very good at marking single birds and getting them. Still working on multiple bird retrieves. The energy level is insane. The thing just loved to run. If the ducks got slow, he would get ansy and his owner would tell him to take a lap. He would jump out of the blind and sprint a full lap around our 10 acre pond. If he didnt think one lap was enough, he would take two, come back and be ready to hunt again. His owner claims he is pretty calm around the house, but ive never seen him in a home setting so I still list that as TBD. Definitely has changed my opinion of the breed though.

I own one and I'll own another one when my golden retriever gets old. Great dogs, driven, bird crazy, smart, no shedding, good with kids, the pros go on and on with these dogs. Mine is started upland, started duck, started blood trailing currently.

Those are two awesome replies, especially his retrieving without formal training. Ideally, I would want him to be able to do basic retrieves, a little blood tracking, and possibly hunt up a few sheds when the mood strikes.
Where did you get your pudelpointer or where would you buy from next?

Start here: LINK

They adhere to strict breeding standards. Pudelpointers were recently added to the akc and the breeders I know were not happy about it. They're concerned about just anyone breeding them for profit and not the betterment of the breed and their abilities.

Bob Farris is the big guy in the Pudelpointer world, but he likely won't ship a dog here and will refer you to someone closer and on that list.

Do your research, get your questions ready and call some breeders. Each one I've called has been willing to spend 30-60 minutes on the phone with me. Keep in mind, they get calls all the time with "do you have any puppies"abd there is usually a wait list for one. I was looking for one a year out when I started researching.

I know of 2 in south Louisiana, mine and a one in Covington. There are more breeders down south, so this is changing slowly.

I'm on my cell, so sorry if this looks like crap or is riddled with typos.

Thanks for the help, I was possibly hoping I may have missed one a bit closer to south la, but have been in contact with Doug Rogers of Juniper Creek kennels. Great looking dogs with awesome accomplishments, but at 2 g's, it's at the very top of what I would want to spend and would definitely knock out any sort of sending 'em to school

Is the going rate 2k now? It was 1500$ a few years ago. Doug is breeding some good dogs I believe. I bought mine out of OH and I am still in contact with the breeder over various things.

Heres another good resource:

There's a great dog out of southern MS who's owner posted a lot here about him. I believe his name on the board is HDC, his dogs name is Cricket and he's a Rockstar of a dog. I spoke to him at length when I was looking as a reference about the breed from my breeder.

Doug has two litters coming soon and that's the number he gave me. So far, of the breeders within reasonable driving range, he's the only one to respond to my email. But also looks to be one of the best in the south

My was flown down from OH. I would've preferred to drive and pickup as well, so I know what you mean.

They should be. It’s happened to virtually every sporting and working breed.

Do your research, get a good dog. He's night and day different from my golden retriever. Not saying the golden isn't a good boy, but just very different.

They seem to be a cross of everything I'm looking for, but they also seem hard to find.

They're not hard to find, they're harder to get for sure.
