Buy VTI until you reach $10,000. Then sell and buy Admiral shares of the mutual fund.
Why? The minimum for VTSMX is $3,000 and the expense ratio is higher. Once you hit $10,000, switch to Admiral Shares because the expense ratio is the same and you can buy partial shares, which you can't do with an ETF.

Should I put all $4000 into VTI? Or diversify by starting with $3000 and then looking somewhere else for the additional $1000?
