I don't get that mindset at all.
Maybe it's self destructive behavior. I don't get why you can't just be with someone, and if you want to be with someone else, just leave your current relationship.
Don't even see how people have the energy to carry on multiple relationships and deal with multiple sources of relationship crap.

They do this because they know they will have someone to fall back on.

Because the cheater wants it all. They want someone to "come home to" regularly and that illusion of stability while still getting to frick around. The one they're cheating on is their safety net.
