My wife works at a very pro-women company and she doesn't get paid maternity leave. They offer a short term disability package through Aflac but you have to be enrolled nine months prior to becoming pregnant we are starting to save now because she will be off for two months without pay. This is the one thing that Europe does right. Most countries there offer generous packages to dads and moms when there is a birth of a child. Otherwise, Europe is quite backwards.

Many places don't.

My hospital we get extended illness time (on top of our normal PTO we can use for illness/vacations/etc) that goes into a bank we can only use for FMLA qualifying events. I have like 450 hours in there so if I have a kid between that and my short term disability policy(pays for 6 weeks of 60% of my pay) I should be able to take off 12-16 weeks.
