One of my good friends was adopted and so was my mother. This is def better than leaving the baby somewhere to just die. At least there is a chance of finding a loving house hold this way.

Until the 1940s or so, many convents in Europe and the US had these. Thoughts were better an orphanage than the situation the babies would have been in.
ETA they usually had a bell for you to ring to let the Nun on call know. The door worked where the Nun couldn’t see who left the baby.
