It sounds like the fitting you attach to the burner is poorly made. The only sure way to test it is to cap or plug the fitting, open the gas to put pressure on the hose fitting and soap it to test for leaks.
If it is the fitting, ditch it and go to your nearest Hank Hill and have him make a good one for you.
