The fill kills the trees because it covers the roots too deep. 12” from the trunk is not enough. Your roots are as long as your limbs.

If you can be patient seed centipede.

I sodded some last year and seeded some. Although there are thin spots in the seeded areas now the plants are doing great and I suspect by mid summer the thin spots will have filled in. The sodded areas were hit with sod web worms likely in the sod and really do not look a lot better than the seed.

I didn’t bring in fill at all.
