I think the better correlation is the breakdown of the nuclear family.

This...and the "remote location" of assistance:

My theory -

In the 'little house on the prairie' days...a family moves into an area. They HAVE to be good neighbors. If the farmer down the way gets injured, they MUST assist in getting his crops in for him, etc. If his barn burns down, the community MUST help out.

Why? Because if YOU get sick or injured...you MUST rely on them. Also, to get any "assistance" from your neighbors, you can't have been an a-hole. If you are a decent person...then, a little extra food gets sent your way, etc.

Now, insert a faceless, nameless, powerful Fed Gov that says: Farmer A...you are a great farmer and have plenty of crops. I am going to take a few bushels from you (you can spare it) and give it to Farmer B.

Suddenly, Farmer B can be an absolute a-hole. His sustenance isn't determined by how his neighbor feels about him. The Fed Gov is taking from the neighbor and giving it to him. The Fed Gov doesn't know or care if EITHER is a "nice guy".

It creates resentment in Farmer A and unconcern in Farmer B.

Of course, this is simplified. It is a message board post. But, that is the concept and why I despise the strong Fed Gov.
