It is, indeed, the “Wacky MAAC” again this year.

Yesterday, #1 seed, Rider (22-9, 15-3), lost to # 9 seed. St. Peters (14-17, 6-12), in the first quarter final game. St. Pete’s made the quarters by beating Monmouth in a Play In Game on Thursday evening.

Then, in the second quarter final, #2 seed, Canisius (21-11, 15-3) lost to # 7 seed Quinnipiac (12-20, 7-11), who beat Siena in a PIG on Siena’s home court on Thursday evening.

Tonight, #3 seed, Niagara (19-12, 12-6) takes on Fairfield (15-15, 9-9) who beat Marist in the PIG on Thursday evening.

And #4 seed, Iona (17-13, 11-7) takes on #5 seed, Manhattan (14-16, 9-9) in the last quarter final game.

Iona and Manhattan have been the MAAC Tourney Champ in each of the last five years. Iona winning three times and Manhattan winning twice.

This is Tim Cluess’ eighth season as Iona’s Head Coach. He has won 20+ games in each season so far. To do so this season, the Gaels will have to win their game tonight, a semi-final game tomorrow, and the Championship game on Monday. Iona swept Manhattan this season, and if they beat the Jaspers for a third time tonight, they will play St. Peter’s in the semis tomorrow (who the Gaels also swept this season).

I’ve always thought it was tough to beat a team three times in a season, but as long as Iona is the reigning MAAC Champ, all comers have to go through New Rochelle to take the crown.

I’m looking forward to watching.

Go Gaels!!!
