Can't believe I'm about to say this, but I agree with everything Lnchbox has to say on this, yall can get into the semantics of who is a necessity and who is not but at the end of the day the birth of a child is, at least ideally, the creation of a new family unit, this is a time where that family should come together to share in the amazing thing that is happening. The day of the birth is just as stressful for the dad, especially the first child, trying to marginalize the dads experience just because he isn't the one physically giving birth is total bs. The mother in law had her moment, she's given birth and experienced it before, she is welcome to be there leading up to the birth IMO, but when its go time, she needs to exit and wait.
This statement basically invalidates everything you've been arguing about for 10 pages to me. This is just like people who don't have kids trying to lecture you about parenting. Until you've given birth and know exactly what its like, you really have no business trying to lecture and browbeat someone who has had kids into what is the right way to handle a situation.
