I have a relative that applied for a mete-Tech job with the national weather bureau. She was told that there was about 120 applicants for one particular opening ( GS -5/7). This was around 2005 though.

Like already mentioned, if you are applying and uploading a standard resume, you're screwed because it will not get through HR prescreen. Government resumes are different style and requirements.
