Because the colleges/universities need you there for at least 4 years for the money. They can't pay for and maintain the huge campus, buildings, sports complexes, sports programs, faculty salaries, beneifts etc. without your 4 years of money. That's why they are so dependent on student loans. Even the one year drop outs who never should have gone are fine with them because they get some money from people who ordinarily wouldn't have gone.

It's a broken system particularly at today's prices. When I was at LSU (pre Tops) tuition was about $1100 per semester so it wasn't a huge financial burden to sort of figure it out while you go.
