Not in the purities needed to get that engine up to the speed they needed. Gasoline was invented in 1870, but was rare and of low quality. They showed how Doc had been expirimenting with ethanol to little success.

He didn't really experiment with Ethanol he put whiskey in the tank and it blew the fuel pump.
First off any grease monkey with a 4th grade education knows that you prime carburetors directly into the carb, not into the tank.
Next, a man who can make a car bend time, and could make an icemaker with 1880's tech, could get some oil and distill it. He would probably only need 2-3 gallons.
Then Not havinga fuel pump wrecks him?
The car had a carb, he could have made a gravity feed. No issue.
