lol, I never thought Of it like that but you are spot on. I think it would have been a better movie to just end it when they were submerged.
I do believe Spielberg added the ending at the auspices of Disney. No fricking way Kubrick would have went out like that. In a perfect world, Kubrick would have gotten a chance to make that flick, as was intended.

Spielberg used Kubrick's script with all his notes in it. That was his ending.
