Ocean Beach is cool place with kind of a retro feel. Can eat at hodads and then head to the beach/pier.
La Jolla is nice just bring a mask for those stank arse seals.
La Jolla trail is neat.
Stop by Torrey Pines if you like golf, gorgeous course to just stop and see.
Solana beach is a cool place to shop if the wife wants to.
Encinitas Fish House has a great Poke Bowl.
Carlsbad village is a cool little place to walk around, also where Legoland is.
You can do all of the above in a day. While on your way down. They would be in reverse order of how I listed them. So start with Carlsbad and then go down to Oceanside.

I think you're thinking of ocean beach not oceanside.
