A traditional king cake is kind of a big cinnamon roll. More of a bread than a cake. To each his own, though. Rickey sells a crap ton of his king cakes so I guess a few people like them.
And yes, it is kind of a big donutslightly modified. Born of necessity since they don’t have ovens, only fryers to cook it in. My understanding is he actually had a specialist from Pillsbury, who was there to help him with a cake donut dough, start him start to develop the king cake dough he uses now.
