My passport has not yet expired but its getting close. What is the quickest route to take to get it done. Years ago I went to NOLA and had it turned around quickly. Is that still an option?

How soon will you be traveling? Exactly when does it expire? If less than six months for expiration and you’re traveling out of the country in that time, you may need to renew it before you go.
I recently renewed mine. I sent mine in, and it took about a month to come back. It wasn’t even expedited. Super easy and glad I didn’t have to make an appointment. That being said, I did not have an impending trip planned, so I couldn’t go to the office. If you look it up on the website, it tells you the amount of time needed before you travel to be able to use the office in Nola, which might be a few weeks. That’s just my understanding, I didn’t look into it too hard since I didn’t need my passport for a few months. The website should answer most of your questions on the process.

I did mine last month via the expedited mail option. It was 2.5 weeks to get it back.
As far as I know New Orleans is still an option too.
If your passport has less than 6 months left on it it is as good as expired.

The NOPC (New Orleans Passport Center) is open and really there for emergency travel (you are leaving in less than two weeks). Just book an appt and you will be good to go.
Depending on where you live in Louisiana, there is actually a walk up passport window in Hot Springs, Arkansas that you can get it done quickly.
But regular time on passports is less than 6 weeks, and with a renewal it will be closer to 4 weeks.

Took my husband just over 2 weeks and that was over Christmas with his application getting delayed a couple of days in the mail. His daughters got theirs in 3. None of them expedited.

I did a renewal at the beginning of December and it took about 10 days and I didn’t pay for the expedited option.

Did mine a couple months ago, took a couple weeks, non-expedited. All you need to do is fill out the form from the post office and send in the old passport and an updated picture. Send it certified of course, I'm sure some people don't.

I did mine in Manila the last time at the U.S. Embassy and it only took a week.

I renewed mine via mail and received my new one in 3 weeks. This was early last year
