It's because canada doesn't run anything creative out of the shifts. He just moves guys around to run basic plays. Malzahn is more creative

The shifts are in service of the reads, they largely aren't used to fool a defense. To be clear, there are some shifts that are for decoy or deceptive purposes, but the garden variety shifting is to help the offense with their reads.

I know when I'm running around, it's much easier for me to read an opponent

Usually. But etling wasn't reading defenses. Etling wasn't changing plays based on shifts. I'm not arguing with you, all I'm saying is that the shifts really weren't confusing to defenses.

thank you. and I'd add that sometimes is was to create favorable blocking situations without changing formation. In those cases, the read is the same as reading the FB. Except he was in motion across the face and it could be anywhere along motion direction. Causes mis-steps, sometimes more favorable angles for OL.

This is the answer. If the shifts confused the defense, that’s a welcome, but unintended consequence. They’re trying to expose key reads, coverages, blitzes, etc.

I don’t think it worked very well for us, but I like the principle.
