I've actually read about someone who used a vacuum cleaning on the fill to suspend the oil while they pulled the filter.

Or just turn the engine off and let the oil drain into the pan before pulling the filter. All you will lose is what is in the filter and a slight amount of residual due to design. 1qt max.
