My main drawback is that anything you can do on the watch you can do on your phone

This is the wrong way to think about it.

Think of it as a notification center for your wrist. Instead of having to pull your phone out of your pocket, or have it on you all the time walking around the house, you get texts, emails, calls, any number of app updates, all from your wrist. You can use Siri to send texts, emails, call, etc.
There's also a ton of use as a fitness tracker. Apple has their own Activity app that tracks movement, calories, exercise, stand time, steps. Has the Nike Run app to help track runs. Pretty sure I read it has the most reliable heart rate tracker in a wearable as well.

If you don't find any of that useful, I wouldn't get one. It's not another device to have a ton of screen time on, it's basically a phone extension.

This is a big no. The exercise part of the phone is terrible. Wouldn't count steps or work outs correctly for multiple people I know. My wife sold hers for a Fitbit. Three coworkers did the same. Terrible even with the under armour apps. The phone part of it can't be beat though. So if getting it for messaging and things of that nature, it's great
