Going back to the French Jacobins, revolutionaries nearly always come from the educated or middle classes. Almost never from the peasants. Lenin's father was a school teacher, for example. NK has done a good job of making sure the fate of those groups is inextricably tied to that of the regime, through a combination of rewards and harsh punishments.
