It sets the tone that, I the director am going disregard how the rest of the movies are made. This scene itself might have been acceptable if Poe was introduced as a comedic character. But he wasn’t it was just one of many random almost slapstick humor thrown in here and there throughout the film. Which is not Star Wars tone.
