Incredibly sad, but I don't think he would've wanted to go out any other way. The LSU vet school people were in shock that he got it down.
Sorry to hear that. Dogs can be really dumb. Mine got into the kitchen garbage, stole a corn cob, and ran around the house chomping on it. Fixed the accessible garbage problem immediately, and we thought he puked up all the cob right away, with assistance of some H2O2. However, there was one small piece that came up a year later, and apparently the irritation from it had been causing him to spit up some yellow bile every few weeks, by which time, I had forgotten about The Corn Cob Incident. It was lucky it didn't cause an obstruction.
