Rebelling against "bourgeois" social norms in order for the parents to feel superior. Then inventing all manner of rationalizations about how it's not about that, like in your story.

If it can be about multiple things, then what's wrong with it being about all things excluding Santa? I'm not telling you not to push Santa as a man who delivers gifts to children who behave. That's your prerogative and I see nothing wrong with it. So why do you suggest that parents must push Santa as a real figure lest the children be robbed of joy? Why must a child's joy, as it relates to Christmas, be dependent on Santa?
