The surgery only had a 50-50 chance when it could be done. That window passed quickly when he lost all feeling. Something to do with nerve endings dying or something. Not viable to try now. So, just looking for something to save him as long as he's not in any pain and can function normally, bowels, etc.

Our experience with canine spinal surgery was pretty awful.

We spent $7,000 on a procedure after being told by the surgeon that there were 60% odds of improving our Great Dane's life.

The wise gal who runs the rescue agency where we adopted our dog cautioned us against the surgery, saying that most owners regret it.

But the fella was our loyal friend and we couldn't say no.

After a painful recovery there were a few weeks of improvement, followed by a rapid decline so terrible that we had to euthanize the dog soon after. Sad days.

YMMV, but if we had to do it over we'd be much more skeptical of that hotshot surgeon's promises.

ETA: lack of bowel control after the surgery put a big strain on our sleep hours and family life. Luckily we had an indoor area with stained concrete floors -
nevertheless, it turned into a pretty foul ordeal.

Just went through it with 2 wieners. One had a severed spinal cord, came back from it, and it happened again, so we had surgery again on her, said she wouldn’t ever walk again, she is running crazy all over the house on all 4.

The other one had a ruptured disc 3 months ago, got it repaired, then a month ago she has a disc in her neck ruptured, got it fixed and she is doing good now, but still having to have confined time to her kennel everyday until the Doc says it’s ok to move around more. It is a lot to deal with, but we have a great Doc, and he has only charged us $2000 per surgery
