Who decides who's "republican" enough?

How far does it go? I'm a republican because I believe in smaller government. It's rather simple, IMO. I lose my republican card because who gets married doesn't affect my life? I lose my republican card because I believe the war on drugs has failed?
I guess my question is why do we allow social issues to take such a commanding presence within the party? It's nuts.

Most of us conservatives don’t care about gay marriage or legalizing weed. At least the vast majority of conservatives under probably 40 or 50.
We just need to put a stop to SJWs and racist liberals as they are the most detrimental to our society.

Social issues are brought about to the forefront by Democrats to paint conservatives as gay hating, racist, misogynists who want to take away welfare and food stamps. Even though there are plenty of conservatives who aren't these things, it's really all they have to cling to because they can't actually run on anything other than identity politics.

Candidates choose because they are essentially forced to as a result of the basically 2 party system. Voters self-identify for various reasons but unless they are a one issue voter (ie abortion or 2A) it is likely they are not strictly liberal or conservative. You used to hear fiscal conservative/social liberal a lot, not much anymore.
It seems to me candidates, for national office at least, previously fought for the votes in the center assuming the far right and left would vote the way one would expect. Recently, I feel like, candidates pander more to the fringes and hope the center votes on which extreme they hate less.

I’m watching you, “Republican”

Except that Trump isn’t extreme, ran on a platform which most centrists agreed with to the point liberals called him a Democrat and his own party called him out on not being a conservative. Now that he got elected because a huge amount of people didn’t want SJWs and beta males running the country, he’s an evil racist bigot. Just lol.

Republicans were traditionally more like George Bush before his VP duty with Reagan. The party has been taken over by successive waves of angry former Dems. Democrats are an angry lot. Southerners brought their issues to the party as did the union men who lost their jobs. Libertarians are also angry lot and brought their nonsense. Those of us who are moderates are in a bad spot. I live in a split congressional district so we go from R to D and back every four years or so. Moderates piss off everyone.
