I think the XLT is plenty enough features for a truck.
OP, get a full size. Two car seats fit easily in my Tundra. If you must get the small truck, get the Z71.

I recently got the XLT. I looked at the Lariat and thought about it but at the end of the day a loaded XLT just made more sense from the economic standpoint. Basically got everything I would have wanted on the Lariat except the air conditioned front seats for a good bit less. I really liked the a/c seats though. Would've likely gotten arrested for driving around with no pants on in the summer time so probably for the best I didn't get those.
