Hmm, I don't know. How many people did the VTech shooter kill with pistols?

If I walked into a small church with a few pistols and the same amount of magazines, perhaps throw in a shotgun as well, what kind of carnage do you think I could inflict on a weaponless church congregation? I think I could rack up a very similar body count.

Just like Newtown. If you think having an AR makes a huge difference when firing into an unarmed mass of people from close range in an enclosed space, you aren't very familiar with firearms. It made a difference in Vegas, you could at least have an argument there, but the simple fact that it was used and is most frequently does not mean that it is dramatically more lethal than other weapons in these situations. It's obviously one of the most popular weapons platforms and offers tremendous versatility but if you ban the most popular weapons platforms their will simply be another that becomes the most popular and around and around we go until the target becomes full confiscation. That's the only place the argument ends.
